Military converts Global City tunnel into heritage site

THE Armed Forces are preserving a portion of the 2.24-kilometer war tunnel below ground in Fort Bonifacio to dedicate it to all the Filipinos who gave their lives fighting the Japanese invasion in World War II.
Military spokesman Col. Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos Jr. says the Fort Bonifacio tunnel is now a heritage site open to public viewing at the initiative of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority.
The tunnel originally had 32 chambers and two exits, one leading to Pembo village and the other to East Rembo village in Makati City.
“Today, amid the rapid development of Bonifacio Global City, a 730-meter segment of the tunnel remains unaffected and existing underneath C-5 Road,” Burgos said.
The tunnel used to be the main attraction of the old Philippine Army Museum and Library, which was relocated as a result of the commercial developments in the area.
“Now that we will bring it back to life, we will now have a new experience inside the tunnel with the memories of our war heroes,” Burgos said.
The Armed Forces and the Bases Authority will also be converting to heritage sites all the war tunnels found in the other military bases across the country.
Bases Authority President Arnel Paciano Casanova says the project is aimed at increasing the people’s understanding and appreciation of the history of the tunnels.
Retired Army Maj. Gen. Restituto Aguillar, who is finishing a book of military historical sites in the country, says the Fort Bonifacio tunnel has a rich history.
The tunnel was built almost simultaneously with Fort McKinley, now known as Fort Bonifacio, around 1910, which was before US Gen. Douglas MacArthur reigned as the Philippine Army’s Field Marshall.
Aguillar says the tunnel served as the main supply depot of the north and southern operations of the US forces against the Filipino revolutionaries.
“Most of the tunnel’s laborers came from the mining firms in Baguio and Benguet as the others were Japanese laborers who were later discovered as soldiers spying for the Japanese military,” Aguilar said.
