Councilor supports bill for higher LGU revenue share

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — City Councilor Jimmy Lazatin recently filed a resolution supporting Senate Bill 2987, which aims to increase the internal revenue allocation (IRA) of local government units (LGUs) by as much as 10 percent from their current share of 40 percent from the National Government.
The bill, also known also as “LGUs share from the national internal revenue taxes,” was introduced and filed by Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III. He nicknamed his proposed legislations as “Bigger Pie, Bigger Slice Bill.”
“Basically, this bill aims to include in IRA, to be shared by the National and Local Government, not only the taxes collected by Bureau of Internal Revenue but also that of Customs, Ports, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Foreign Affairs among other agencies deputized by BIR to collect national taxes. Thus the nickname ‘Bigger Pie’,” Lazatin said.
Also, the bill proposes to increase the IRA share of LGUS from 40 percent to 50 percent.
At present, the National Government has 60 percent from the IRA while the local governments composed of barangay, municipalities, cities and provinces have only 40 percent.
“This bill is beneficial to all LGUs and I believe that the passage of such bill will give better resources to LGUs in the implementation of their programs,” Lazatin said.
