Angeles City gov’t releases culture maps for 33 barangays

ANGELES CITY—After four months’ research of the 33 barangays here, finally, a three-volume book output containing the city’s history, culture and traditions are now preserved after it has been culturally mapped by researches coming from the University of Santo Tomas and 55 public school teachers and senior citizens residing in the city.
The said volume reveals and traces the stories and memories of Angeles; and uncovers tangible, intangible, natural and built resources, said Angeles City Tourism Office (ACTO) head Christine Nunag.
“This is also the first time that the city government done this which spots its history, culture, customs, tradition, food, among others that would be passed on to generation to generation,” Nunag said.
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, meanwhile, disclosed that a city should recognize its heritage and historical value, for if not it is compared to a body that has lost its soul.
“Digging the roots of the city is one of the many ways of the city government to project and promote Angeles’ colourful history, culture, and culinary arts as tourist attractions,” he said.
UST’s Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment (CCPET) Director Eric Zerrudo said their center, together with ACTO and researchers, had been in an intensive documentation, field works, folk interviews, examination of heritage structures, and ocular visits to put on “details on how it [Angeles] came into existence.”
Moreover, Zerrudo explained that being a hodgepodge of different races and considered a highly urbanized city, it is very important for the city to identify and compile its historical and heritage treasures “since many of these are endangered.”
