104 years of Kapampangan beauties published in book
ANGELES CITY — More than 200 faces of Kapampangan beauties compiled in a book called “Aro Katimyas Da!” (Oh how beautiful they are) was launched Saturday at Holy Angel University.
The book, authored by advertising executive officer Alex Castro, traces the beauty of Kapampangans who won in international and local pageants since the year 1908 until 2012.
Before Eat Bulaga’s Miss Philippines 2012 Ryzza Mae Dizon and Miss International Queen Kevin Balot, spotlights were on Socorro Henson of this city, Manila Carnival Queen 1926; Rosario Panganiban from Macabebe, Miss Philippines of Philippine Free Press 1925, and Miss Pampanga 1926; Corazon Hizon who hails from City of San Fernando, Miss Pampanga 1933; and, Cleofe Balingit from Macabebe, Miss Mindanao 1936, among others.
Castro explained that the book consists of 250 pages and took five years before going off the press.
Castro’s fascination of collecting photos of beauty queens traces back since the Manila Carnival, a two-week fair organized to celebrate harmonious US and Philippines relations, which began in 1908.
Borne out of accumulation of archival pictures that the author has been collecting for years, Castro, a Filipiniana photo collector, thought that instead of gathering dust in carton boxes under his bed, he’d find use for them, thus his second book, after “Views from the Pampang & Other Scenes/ Scenes from a Bordertown & Other Views,” was published.
The book is sold at Holy Angel University-Center for Kapampangan Studies. For more information, you could contact Myra Lopez at 099204258711 or e-mail kapampangancenter@gmail.com.
