Calumpit Bulacan flood: 22 barangays submerged by floods, worst in 40 years

Bulacan, Philippines – Twenty-two barangays in Calumpit, Bulacan were reportedly submerged by massive floods affecting almost 26,000 families, one day after typhoon Pedring left the country.

As noted at local news sites on Friday, September 30, 2011, thousands of residents of Calumpit stayed on rooftops of their houses while others have abandoned their homes due to flood on Thursday.
Other Bulacan towns that were also affected by the flood include Bustos, San Miguel, Obando, Meycauayan, Marilao, Bocaue, Malolos and Hagonoy, but Calumpit was said to have suffered most.
“We are experiencing a flood unprecedented in 40 years. The flood hit our dike…This has never happened before.” Calumpit Mayor James de Jesustold ABS-CBN News on Friday.
According to reports, the strong current of flood started on Thursday night and some Calumpitresidents decided to stay at home since their town was noted to be a flood-prone area.
Mayor De Jesus has already instructed their municipal hall as well as some private buildings to accommodate people affected by the flood, which went as high as human chest and even higher in some places.
Rescue teams from different government agencies were already deployed to provide relief goods but some places were very hard to reach and boats can only be used as transportation.
Meanwhile, Bulacan Governor Willy Alvarado told reports that the Calumpit flood was due to the release of water from three dams namely Angat Dam, Ipo Dam and Bustos Dam.
“It’s unprecedented that a flood this high has reached low-lying areas. We need to study in the release of water in these dams.” Governor Alvarado was quoted on reports.
On the other hand, National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) flood forecasting and warning system division manager Alex Palada said that the releasing of water from the dams caused the floods.
“It is not just the water from the dam causing the floods. Calumpit is a confluence of the Angat Dam andPampanga River.” Palada reportedly said, noting that Pampanga River gets water from Nueva Ecija andPampanga.
