Facebook users condemn Gantan’s murder pictures

MABALACAT – Facebook users from this province condemned yesterday the unscrupulous spread on cyberspace of the alleged murder photos of call center agent.
Facebook users who called Sun.Star Pampanga’s attention sent a copy of the alleged murder photos of Katrina Gantan that have been spreading online like wildfire.
Gantan, 22, a call center agent in Clark Freeport, was beheaded inside a motel room in Angeles City last October 1 and her head was taken by the suspect.
One user, who refused to be named, said the pictures, which he described as “gory, insensitive and disturbing,” shows the headless body of a naked woman sprawled on a bathroom floor.
The photos even featured serial numbers on a piece of paper and with date at October 2, 2010. It is, however, still not clear if the photos are authentic and if these were the same photos of the Gantan murder scene.
“The photos are very disturbing. The spread of these photos do little in respecting the memory of the victim. Though we all feel sorry for what has happened to her, we must stop spreading these photos so that they would not become sources of amusement. Let us respect Gantan,” the Facebook user said.
The concerned users said that the spread of the pictures are disrespectful and is an obvious violation of good taste and human rights.
The Mabalacat Facebook users are calling for a stop in the spread of the photos and called on local authorities to undertake steps in preventing such scenarios from happening again. They said many heinous crimes have been committed in Angeles City in the past two weeks, but pictures of the victims have not been posted on the Internet for people to ogle.
“Let us call on the authorities to look at the authenticity of the photos,” one of the concerned users said. They said that they are appealing to fellow Facebook users to help trace the source of the photos and to stop their spread by refraining from tagging other accounts.
Last Saturday, joint elements of the Mabalacat and Angeles City police found the victim’s head along the Sapang Balen creek near the Morales Bridge in Barangay Poblacion.
Gantan’s boyfriend and co-employee at the Sutherland call center – identified as Adonis Carino Reyes, 30, of Fiesta Communities, Barangay Tabun – was tagged as the alleged suspect in the brutal killing.
As of afternoon Thursday, the alleged murder photos have also been spreading through mobile phones in the City of San Fernando. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
