Group to pursue protests vs hog farms

ANGELES CITY — Despite the land dispute case he is facing, Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement president Ruperto Cruz said he will not withdraw his protests against the piggeries and poultry farms in Porac town.
“I will keep on fighting for their closure or relocation despite the land case the Nepomucenos filed against me,” Cruz said.
The Nepomucenos filed the land case late last month claiming a portion of Cruz’s land as theirs.
The closure of a Nepomuceno hog farm in this city is believed to be one of the reasons that ignited the land dispute.
Cruz, also owner of the Royal Garden Golf and Country Club (RGGCC), has rallied against 14 big hog farms in Porac along with other environmentalists groups.
Some hog farms in this city have been also complained by Cruz to have violated sanitation laws.
Auxiliary Bishop Pablo Virgilio David earlier expressed his support to the PGKM protests.
“We have settled that land issue a long time ago. Their using it against me now because I was able to prompt government officials to close their hog farm,” Cruz said.
The Nepomucenos have barricaded the entrance to the RGGCC, which they claimed as their property, with a concrete fence.
Hearings on the land case are still ongoing.
However, Cruz said his intentions of saving the public from illnesses caused by the foul stench emanated by violating hog farms will continue.
“We’re not against the operation of these hog farms per se. We just wish for them to follow the laws. They have generated revenues for 20 years so I don’t think they do not have the money to improve their sanitation facilities,” Cruz said. (Charlene Cayabyab)
