Angeles City gears for drug prevention week celebration Tuesday, November 15, 2011

ANGELES CITY — In line with the observance of Anti-Drug Week, the Angeles City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (Acadac) headed by Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan is scheduled to conduct a march-rally against drug abuse on November 25.
Pamintuan said “this is in pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 124 declaring the third week of November of every year, as the Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Week.”
With the theme “Mahalin ang Kalikasan, Ingatan ang Kalusugan, Droga’y Iwasan”, Pamintuan stressed that his administration is very much concerned about the harmful effects and damage inflicted of drugs to society.
“The City Government of Angeles has made drug abuse prevention a priority and has continued its task of improving the quality of life of its citizens, including protection from drug addiction and substance abuse,” the mayor added.
Anna Liza Suller, Acadac program head, said the council ensures the active participation of all government agencies, business, academe, people’s organization and non-government organizations, likewise advocating the passage of anti-dangerous drug abuse and rehabilitation ordinances.
“There is greater need for the inclusion of all sectors of the community to join hands and work together to combat drug abuse through activities that aim to broaden the knowledge and awareness on the use of illegal substances and its harms,” she said.
The rally will start at several assembly points including Chevalier School in Sto. Domingo, Dieg’s Bakery in Sto. Cristo, Crossing in Sta. Teresita, Holy Family Academy in Cutcut and will converge at Nepo Quadrangle where a program will be held. It is anticipated that around 5,000 will participate.
Other highlights of the drug abuse prevention and control week celebration from November 21 to 25 include a citywide photo exhibit, symposia and a massive information drive in different barangays and schools in the city, all geared toward creating greater awareness of the menace of drug and substance abuse.
Suller added they have already invited rehabilitated drug dependents to share their first-hand experiences during these symposia.
The Acadac was re-organized under Executive Order 16, Series of 2010, pursuant to Republic Act 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
The council aims to safeguard the integrity of its territory and the well-being of its constituency particularly the youth from the harmful effects of dangerous drugs on their physical and mental well-being.
The Acadac pursues an intensive and unrelenting campaign against the trafficking and use of dangerous drugs and other similar substance through an integrated system of planning, implementation and law enforcement of anti-drug abuse policies, programs and projects.
These include consultation meetings with various non-government organizations, POs and other sectoral organizations, organizing barangay anti-drug abuse councils in all 33 barangays and ensuring the active participation of all government agencies and departments. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
