Aquino unveils historic family marker in Tarlac

By Charlene Cayabyab

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — President Benigno Aquino III, along with third generation members of the Aquino clan, assisted in the unveiling of the historical marker of the Aquino Ancestral House in Concepcion, Tarlac.
In a report from the Philippine Information Agency in Central Luzon, the unveiling was led by National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) chairperson Maria Serena Diokno and Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV.
The President also witnessed the reading and signing of the proclamation of the Aquino Ancestral House as a National Historical Landmark.
President Aquino spent some of his younger years in the ancestral house.
According to Ludovico Badoy, executive director of the NHCP, the ancestral house has been declared as national historical landmark way back in 1987 by virtue of Board Resolution Number 1, series of 1987, because of its historical significance.
“With the declaration, the ancestral house has become protected by law,” Badoy said.
Built in 1939, the Aquino house had been home to three generations of famous Filipinos – General Servillano Aquino (1874 – 1959); Benigno Aquino Sr. (1894-1947); and Benigno Aquino Jr. (1932-1983).
Servillano Aquino was a general during the Philippine Revolution against Spain in 1896 and in the Philippine-American War in 1898. He was the grandfather of the late Benigno Aquino Jr.
Benigno Aquino Sr. was speaker of the Second Philippine Republic National Assembly from 1943 to 1944. He also served as secretary of Agriculture and Commerce of the Philippines in 1938 to 1941 and had a stint as senator.
Benigno Aquino Jr., meanwhile, became governor of Tarlac at the age of 29 in 1961, and later was elected as the youngest senator in the history of Philippine politics in 1967 at the age of 34. He was the most vocal critic of the Marcos regime in the 70s and 80s.
The ancestral house, which has withstood the era of World War II in the 40s and still stands for more than 70 years now, has undergone some renovations to maintain its picturesqueness. Its interiors were done by woodcarvers from Betis in Guagua, Pampanga.
During the unveiling ceremonies, Mr. Aquino mentioned the influence made by his grandmother, the late Dona Aurora “Apung Guindang” Aquino (Ninoy’s mother) during the unveiling of a historical marker at the Aquino ancestral home in Concepcion, Tarlac.
The President noted his grandmother’s principle of “living a life with others,” a trait she had passed on to her descendents.
Mr. Aquino said his “lola” touched the lives not only of her children and immediate family but even that of ordinary people she was acquainted with, what with the constant nurturing and unconditional love she had shown in her lifetime.
The chief executive added that the family still feels the presence of Apung Guindang where they draw strength in times of life’s uncertainties.
He implied the solidarity of the Aquino clan, amidst the members’ differences, as something that will always be constant.
“There may be times when some of us choose to cross distinct directions leading to the same destination, but at the end of the day, we still go home to our family to seek strength and guidance,” Mr. Aquino said.
He attributed the solidarity of the Aquinos to the values Apung Guindang has inculcated to her descendants, particularly in nurturing their character to become resilient to triumphs and tragedies.
