CIAC, PAF open vital road leading to Clark airport

CLARK FREEPORT — Officials of the Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) and the Philippine Air Force (PAF) led Monday the opening of the A. Bonifacio Avenue, which was closed as part of the airport security measures several years ago.
The opening of the vital road will benefit the passengers and tourists using the Clark International Airport (CIA).
CIAC President and CEO Victor Jose I. Luciano and PAF 600th Air Base Wing Commander Brigadier General Fred Payawan led the re-opening of the A. Bonifacio Avenue to cater thousands of passengers using the Clark International Airport Passenger Terminal.
“The reopening of the A. Bonifacio Avenue will benefit everyone especially to our passengers going to the Clark Airport and this is timely because the airport now caters domestic flights,” Luciano said during a simple re-opening ceremony held at the Air Force City.
The highway was closed to traffic three years ago by the PAF officials. But Luciano asked the 600th Air Base Wing to reopen the avenue due to the increase of passengers brought about by the entry of additional domestic flights by Air Asia and Airphil Express.
Luciano said the highway will also eased up traffic along the M.A. Roxas highway in the Air Force City section leading to the duty free stores and the airport.
Air Asia had started its domestic flights to Puerto Pincesa, Davao and Kalibo since March 28 and Airphil Express to Davao, Kalibo, Puerto Princesa and Cebu.
CIAC is targeting an increased of close to a million passengers before the end of 2012.
President Benigno Aquino earlier supported the establishment of a Budget Terminal at Clark International Airport due to the entry of budget carriers in the area. Air Asia alone will carry around five million passengers within the next five to seven years.
Luciano proposed to Transportation Secretary Manuel Mar Roxas a budget terminal estimated to cost at P12 billion and is expected to accommodate 10 to 12 million passengers annually.
