Climate change could lead to ‘washout’ of towns

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – An economic official has recently agreed with the result of a study conducted by some experts in global warming stating that coastal towns adjacent to Pampanga River are in danger of being totally washed out.

Remigio Mercado, regional director of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) in Central Luzon, said that if the pattern of climate change and greenhouse effect will not change, the water level will increase several meters higher and would affect flood-prone towns Macabebe, Masantol and Sasmuan among others.

Climate change is a long-term change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods of time that range from decades to millions of years.

It may be a change in the average weather conditions or a change in the distribution of weather events. Climate change may be limited to a specific region, or may occur across the whole Earth.

“Hindi natin ino-oppose yung result ng pag aaral ng mga experts. Imagine tumataas ang water sea level habang patuloy na nagsu-subside ang ground level ng mga lugar malapit sa Pampanga River,” Mercado pointed out.

As this developed, he urged executives of the concerned local government units to take into account the current condition.

“They need to be ready for climate adaptation and should undergo necessary preparation for disaster risks management,” Mercado said.

“Wrong plans could even lead to greater disaster,” he stressed.

Mercado also suggested to municipal executives to examine the flooding pattern.

He claimed that people should no longer be allowed to build on sites near the Pampanga River. Mercado added that the threat to coastal towns should also be considered in granting permits to businesses to build near the river. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
