Comelec allows 2 Castros in Mabalacat mayoralty contest

MABALACAT CITY–The Second Division of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has junked a petition to declare Noli Castro Jr. a nuisance candidate in the upcoming mayoral elections here.
The Comelec junked for “lack of merit” the petition filed by Vice Mayor Noel Castro to disqualify Castro Jr. as a “nuisance” candidate.
In a decision signed by Lucenito Tagle, Comelec presiding commissioner, it noted that the “instant petition is based solely on the fact that petitioner and respondent bear the same surname.”
“But then similarity of names alone does not suffice as ground to declare a candidate as a nuisance. More so when allegations of petitioner are unsubstantiated and based only on conjectures,” the decision read.
With Castro Jr.’s qualification, the mayoral race here will be a three-cornered fight. The other two candidates are incumbent Mayor Marino Morales and Vice Mayor Castro.
Earlier, Vice Mayor Castro called for the disqualification of Castro Jr. in the Mabalacat polls.
Vice Mayor Castro alleges “that Noli Castro’s nickname is ‘Jun Castro’ which is similar to the nickname registered by a certain Marcos ‘Jun’ Castro, a candidate for the position of councilor in Mabalacat City in the May 2010 elections.”
Castro Jr. will run under
PDP-Laban.
“Hindi ko po alam kung bakit gusto akong ipa-disqualify ni Noel Castro. Siguro alam niya na lumalakas ang aking chances na matalo ko siya,” Castro Jr., said.
“Alam po kasi ng aming mga kababayan na hindi ako mang-aagaw ng lupa, hindi rin po ako sugarol at hindi pa tambling tambling sa mga isyu lalo na noong panahon ng kampanya ng cityhood. Meron po tayong paninindigan at isang salita at higit sa lahat hindi po tayo abortionist,” he added.
Marcos Castro is now running for provincial board member of Pampanga.
Vice Mayor Castro further argued that Castro Jr. “has been ill without permanent source of income, and running as lone candidate without vice mayoralty or councilor candidates with him.”
He noted that Castro Jr. will only create confusion among voters in Mabalacat City.
Castro Jr., however, disputed the claims of Vice Mayor Castro because he said “he is a bona fide candidate for the position of mayor in Mabalacat City.”
Although he lost when he ran for councilor in the May 2010 polls, Castro Jr., bagged 15,624 votes.
Vice Mayor Castro had been receiving flak for having campaign against the approval of the cityhood of Mabalacat.
The vice mayor had supported the call for the conversion of Mabalacat town into a component city during its initial phase but withdrew his support during the campaign period for cityhood.
A survey conducted by Asian Research Organization (ARO) in Mabalacat indicated that Castro Jr. was way ahead of Vice Mayor Castro. ●Charlene Cayabyab
