Fishing grounds to be converted to rice lands

CANDABA – An official from the Municipal Agricultural and Fisheries (MAFC) in this town said at least 30,000 hectares of fishing grounds in Barangay Lanang is set to be converted into rice lands.
This came as fishpond operators suffered tremendous loses due to massive flooding brought about by typhoons and the recent attack of turtles as earlier reported.
Jojo Paguinto, MAFC chairman, stressed the conversion is the most practical thing to do as the fishing industry is continuously “dying” due unpredictable weather conditions and other natural causes as a result of climate change.
“Lugi na ang nagpapalaisdaan. Marami ang hindi umani ng maganda habang patuloy naman ang pagtaas ng halaga ng feeds,” Paguinto said.
He likewise said this initiative aims to support the rice sufficiency program of the National Government.
“Kung hindi na tayo kumikita sa isdaan tama lang gamitin muna ang lupa sa pagtatanim ng palay makakatulong pa tayo sa programa ng pamahalaan sa rice sufficiency,” Paguinto added.
It can be recalled earlier that the Department of Budget and Management has released P3.430 billion for the administration’s rice sufficiency program.
The program aims to help farmers increase their yield and achieve rice self-sufficiency by 2013.
With this, the farmers are provided with quality seeds, irrigation, credit and marketing assistance to improve farm productivity and profitability.
