Importance of farmer training vs global warming cited

May 24, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — New Department of Agriculture (DA) regional director Andrew Villacorta highlighted the importance of the Small-Scale Irrigation System-Farmers’ Field School (SSIS-FFS) in responding to challenges of global warming.
Villacorta, who led the graduation of farmers under the training program, said the SSIS-FFS is beneficial to farmers as it hurdles the problems brought about by the El Niño and La Niña phenomena without compromising farm yield.
The SSIS-FFS is under the Rainfed Agriculture Development Project funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
The overall objective of the Rainfed Agriculture Development (RAD) Project is to enhance food security of rain-fed rice farming communities to buffer the effects of volatile food prices in the Philippines.
It also aims to increase production of rice and other crops by rain-fed farmers through the promotion of Small-Scale Irrigation System (SSIS), including shallow tube wells and surface water pumps.
“This is very ideal in hurdling the problems brought about by global warming and we see better yield for our farmers and a better future for local farming despite the challenges of global warming,” Villacorta said.
Villacorta said the farmers who have undergone the program were also taught on how to use certified seeds and utilization of new farm techniques to increase production yield.
He said that close to 300 farmers have completed the SSIS-FFS and are now ready to implement the things they have learned in their training in their respective farms.
The DA is assisting farmers to effectively implement the program.
