‘Labuyo’ destroys houses in Candaba

CANDABA, Pampanga –At least eight families were left homeless in Barangay Vizal San Pablo, this town, as their houses were totally damaged due to the breach of the embankment of Maasim River at the height of typhoon Labuyo.

Engineer Edgar Anicete, town’s general services officer, disclosed that the biggest damage left by Labuyo here was the scouring of Maasim River in three major portions in barangays Vizal Sto. Nino, Vizal Sto. Cristo and Pulung Gubat.

Anicete said that a 10 meters of the portion of the dike in Vizal Sto. Nino; five in Sto Cristo and another 10 meters in Vizal San Pablo were breached, which alarmed residents living near the earth dike.

Oleva Manalastas, 84, a resident here, said that the water in Maasim river had started to rise beyond its alert level which caused panic among the families living near the dike.

“We saw the rampaging flood water that spread out from the river. At first, we tried to contain the water flow and made the necessary preventive measures but we failed. We have no option left but to vacate our houses and move to safer places,” he said.

Severino Manalastas, also an affected resident, narrated that last Monday, around 8 p.m., a huge volume of water filled the river which weakened the earth dike’s foundation.

“Lumambot ang pundasyun at bumagsak ang isang bahagi nito. Iyong nakatambak na sand bags sa gilid, tinangay din ng rumaragasang tubig. Lahat ng tinamaang bahay nawasak lahat,” Manalastas added.

Days before Labuyo hit the country, particularly the province of Pampanga, Mayor Rene Maglanque has already formed “Task Force Labuyo” for the 24/7 monitoring of all the 33 villages of the town, particularly the riverside barangays.

Maglanque said the task force was also created to provide immediate and necessary assistance to the residents as the need arises.
The task force Labuyo was headed by Maglanque, together with the members of municipal disaster risks reduction management council and other volunteers.
