LGUs reminded to spare SPES beneficiaries from campaigning

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) regional office is reminding the local government units (LGUs) in Central Luzon to spare the student-beneficiaries of the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) from any campaign activities.

DOLE regional information officer Jerry Borja said they are strictly monitoring the work activities being tasked to the SPES beneficiaries working in various LGUs.

Borja said only works that concerned various LGU departments should be assigned to the SPES beneficiaries.

“What we are referring to are the line functions of the local government if they (SPES beneficiaries) are being assigned in the LGUs. They cannot utilize our youth workers in any campaign sorties,” he said.

So far, Borja said the DOLE has not yet received any reports that the SPES beneficiaries in the region are being used by political candidates in the campaign activities.

He asked the public to report to DOLE any information regarding the matter.

“If they heard reports that our youth workers are being exploited for political activities, they may coordinate and report to the nearest DOLE offices,” he said.

The DOLE-3 office has allotted more than P42 million for its year-round SPES in Central Luzon.

Some 15,715 students and out-of-school youths (OSYs) from all over the region will stand to benefit from the program that kicked off this month.
“We are empowering poor but deserving students for them to engage in short-term employment with the end-goal of pursuing and finishing their education,” he said.

The total P42 million budget represents the government’s 40-percent share in the payment of salaries of beneficiaries.

The remaining 60 percent of salary payments, on the other hand, shall be shouldered by the different participating companies and LGUs from all over the region, where the students are being employed.
