Oca out to ‘correct’ district governance

MEXICO, Pampanga–City of San Fernando Mayor and Third District Representative-elect Oscar Rodriguez on Friday said saving Pampanga’s capital city and the district from an alleged “incorrect” government had driven him to run for congressman and not governor.

Rodriguez, who was interviewed at the inauguration of a dialysis center and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Mexico Community Hospital (MCH), was apparently alluding to Third District Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales whom the three-term mayor defeated by some 32,000
votes.
Rodriguez issued the statement when asked about the reasons he faced Gonzales and not Gov. Lilia Pineda, who won via landslide against former Gov. Eddie Panlilio.

Reports earlier said that Rodriguez was asked by the ruling Liberal Party (LP) to go up against Pineda, who was on her first term as governor.

Rodriguez said it was “difficult” for him and the LP if he had run for governor against Pineda.
“It’s one step backward and two steps forward,” said Rodriguez, using the famous saying in explaining the gains of running for congressman.

Rodriguez said that he also wanted the LP headed by President Aquino to remain in power in Pampanga, notably in the Third District.

“It worked, and now the people are guaranteed of continuous ‘inclusive’ public service,” said Rodriguez, a multi-awarded mayor and former congressman.

“By inclusive,” he added, “it means the poor will greatly benefit from our service and not the few exclusive ones.”
Rodriguez stressed that “sense of fulfilment” had driven him not retire from politics.

“It’s hard work for those who really want to serve. It may also be an opportunity for other politicians who want to enrich themselves,” said Rodriguez.

“I am rich in fulfilment because I was able to serve my people,” said Rodriguez, who prioritized education.
Gonzales could not be reached for his comments. Last week, Gonzales dared his critics, including Rodriguez, to file charges against him in connection with earlier reports and accusations that he was involved in alleged anomalous multi-million infrastructure projects in the district.

Gonzales, who is on his second term, said the filing of charges before the proper forum will clear his name and reveal the truth.
