San Fernando prelate honored for service

CANDABA, Pampanga — San Fernando Archbishop Paciano “Apu Ceto” Aniceto was recently honored for his pastoral guidance for the Archdiocese of San Fernando during simple rites at the Saint Andrew the Apostol Parish here.

Aniceto received a plaque of recognition for his “guidance and pastoral care” of the parish and the whole archdiocese from parish priest Msgr. Roger Yambao and Architect Andy Gulapa. The award came as recognition of Aniceto’s life as shepherd of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of San Fernando which counts approximately some five million Catholics.

“Apu Ceto has done a lot in terms gearing the Church here in the right path. His guidance and support for the lay initiatives is something that is worth recognizing,” Gulapa, an active member of the parish here, said.

Aniceto, he said, has also been vocal about social issues that concern the Church and its people. He added that Aniceto’s non-retirement is a clear indication that his presence is greatly valued by Church authorities and its people.

The archbishop was set to retire two years ago, but his retirement was held pending replacement and orders from the Vatican. He is the third Archbishop to hold the Metropolitan See, which is located in San Fernando City, Pampanga.

Born to a simple family in Barrio San Joaquin in Sta. Ana, Apu Ceto or the young Ciniong then was brought up piously, joining the acolytes to eventually grow up in the favor of God and pursue his priestly vocation.

Since assuming the Archdiocese of San Fernando in 1989, Apu Ceto created new parishes to address the growing pastoral concerns of his flock. He carved more of these after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, particularly in resettlement sites to provide for the spiritual needs of displaced Kapampangans in diaspora who bonded in small communities.

His popularity even earned for him a play about his life with the Roman Catholic Church.

Asked what he will do when he finally retires, Aniceto said: “I will write something. Books, based on my compilations. I would stay at Domus Padtorum [Bale Pari or Home for Retired Priests at the Social Action Center of Pampanga] because I would like to live in a community and be close to God as ever.
