Sto. Tomas products take center stage in Sabuaga Festival

STO. TOMAS — This year’s Sabuaga Festival will highlight various products of the barangays of this town, adding a whole new meaning to the religious significance of the festivity.
Mayor Joselito Naguit told Sun.Star Pampanga that the Sabuaga Festival 2012 will be participated by the town’s seven villages of Sto. Rosario, San Matias, Sto. Niño Sapa, San Vicente, San Bartolome, Poblacion and Moras Dela Paz under the theme “It’s More Fun in Sto. Tomas.”
Sabuaga Festival, now on its third year, was revived by the Municipal Government, religious and lay leaders here from the old town ritual of celebrating Easter Sunday.
Sabuaga comes from the combination of sabuag (scatter) and sampaga (flowers) from custom sagalas’ (town beauties) showering of petals on the image of the Virgin Mary during the folk tradition of Salubong.
“We also added various programs to add more significance to the event for other sectors of our town. The various barangays will be showcasing their respective products along with the usual highlights of street dancing and competitions all in honor of Easter Sunday,” Naguit said.
The town’s agriculture produce, pottery, casket making, poultry products, garments among others will be showcased in the event.
The street dance presentations will be participated by all barangays with their respective costumes inspired by their local products. The street dancing will start at 2:00 p.m. of April 8, Easter Sunday.
Free dance interpretation will then proceed at 7 p.m. Last year’s overall champion was San Bartolome.
There will also be a grand calesa parade at 1 p.m. with participants visiting major thoroughfares of the town.
Naguit said the event aims to bring Sto. Tomas into the local tourism map and become a part of the yearly list of places to visit by catholic devotees. He said that the event also aims to continue cultural traditions that are rooted on local faith and beliefs of the people.
