Tech center eyes more livelihood at 35

MABALACAT — Technology Resource Center (TRC) director general Dennis “Decu” Cunanan said the agency is committed to generate more livelihood opportunities as it celebrates its 35th anniversary in February next year.
“The TRC is set to celebrate its 35th anniversary next year through an intensified drive to commercialize various flagship innovation projects in the country,” Cunanan said.
He added that the TRC is stepping up its project development efforts through “market niching,” which means that the center would strategically aim its technopreneurial programs to match the needs of key sectors of society.
“With this strategy, we expect to create not just more livelihood opportunities but we also look forward to developing better and more relevant programs — efficient and with higher success rates,” he said.
Among the biggest projects the TRC is presently working on is the development of community-based business incubators.
Cunanan said the project is an off-shoot of TRC’s success in managing the Open Technology Business Incubator in University of the Philippines Diliman, which is jointly owned by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the center’s parent-agency.
With the program, countryside entrepreneurs who want to pursue technology-based businesses would receive well-rounded support, which includes access to consultancy experts in law, accounting, marketing, and funding.
TRC deputy director general Glenn Santos said the agency is also planning to partner with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to ease the distribution of rice varieties to local farmers.
With the coordination with IRRI, the TRC may help in the stabilization of quality rice production and contribute in attaining an improved income for farmers and better nutrition for consumers.
Also in the TRC pipeline is the commercialization of affordable baby food products aimed at addressing the problem of child malnutrition in the country.
Santos noted that the project is now being pilot tested by the DOST National Food Research Institute (NFRI).
After passing the certification procedures, TRC will activate the commercial dissemination to target consumers.
Other TRC projects include the commercialization of technology-based local inventions, commercial development of healthy alternative flours, manufacture of air fresheners out of seaweeds and mass production of chopsticks and skewers out of local bamboos.
The agency is also poised to set up a rice post-harvest facility in Nueva Ecija in partnership with the National Agribusiness Corporation.
Recently, TRC has also teamed up with Duty Free Philippines Corporation to provide free livelihood training to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who will avail themselves of the Kabuhayan Shopping Program.
TRC is a government-owned and controlled corporation under the administrative supervision of the DOST.
Formerly known as Technology and Livelihood Resource Center, the agency is mandated to transform the country’s technology assets into business success stories that redound to better life for Filipinos.
Now on its new location at Jacinta II Building, Edsa, Guadalupe Nuevo, Makati City, TRC is most popularly known in providing entrepreneurs affordable training and self-study videos and booklets dealing with technology-based businesses.
Cunanan said the TRC has surpassed its collection target for 2011 by more than 60 percent with a total collection of 173 million from its projects. The figure, he said, were collected from only 20 corporations and individuals.
