Typhoons drown hope of record rice harvest

A STRING of typhoons have frustrated what would have been a record rice harvest of 17.4 million metric tons (MT), the Department of Agriculture (DA) told senators Tuesday.
“If not for the series of typhoons, this could have been the year that the country posted its highest-ever palay yield on record,” Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said at a budget hearing for his department.
The shortfall because of typhoon damage will be around a million metric tons.
“But we still have enough supply,” he said, adding the DA will put a five percent margin on the projected rice harvest for the second half of the year in anticipation of more typhoons that may hit the country.
The country is expected to import 500,000 MT of rice next year.
The National Food Authority council may revise the projection in November, he said.
He said the country still has a buffer of more than two months’ worth of rice. The NFA has 1.5 million MT in its warehouses. Another 687,000 MT are in commercial warehouses, while households have an estimated 825,000 MT in stock.
Alcala said the government has distributed free palay seeds to farmers in Central and Northern Luzon to replace 1.3 million MT of palay destroyed by the recent typhoons. The country may still have to import more rice, though, since harvests will be delayed.
Senator Franklin Drilon, Senate finance committee chairman, said rice prices should stay stable despite typhoon damage.
“There was damage but production in the Visayas is sufficient to partially cover up for the production loss in Luzon,” he said.
He added the Senate will support a DA to make the country rice sufficient by raising production to around 21 million MT by 2013.
“We will provide the necessary funds in order to support our rice production, particularly for self sufficiency by 2013,” he said. (Sunnex)
